Abstract
The rise of e-commerce has introduced “digital scarcity” cues (e.g., countdown timers, limited stock alerts) that significantly alter consumer decision-making. This research utilizes functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to monitor the neural activity of 40 participants during a simulated online shopping task. Our findings reveal that scarcity triggers bypass the prefrontal cortex—the area responsible for rational deliberation—and directly stimulate the nucleus accumbens, inducing a “buy-now” response. This study provides neurobiological evidence for the predatory nature of certain UX design patterns.
1. Introduction
Traditional economic models assume a “rational agent” who maximizes utility based on available information. However, the modern digital marketplace is designed to exploit heuristic shortcuts. Digital scarcity—the perception that a product is about to become unavailable—creates a psychological state of “competitive arousal.”
While previous literature has focused on the psychological outcomes of scarcity, this paper explores the biological mechanisms. We hypothesize that time-limited offers create a temporary suppression of the executive control network, leading to suboptimal financial choices.
2. Technical Formulation
To quantify the “Urgency Factor” ($U_f$), we developed a mathematical model to predict the probability of a purchase ($P$) under time pressure ($t$):

3. Experimental Design
Participants were exposed to two types of stimuli:
- Neutral Control: Standard product pricing without time constraints.
- Stress Condition: Products accompanied by a flashing “Only 2 left!” banner and a 30-second timer.
Preliminary data shows a 45% increase in BOLD (Blood-Oxygen-Level-Dependent) signals in the amygdala when the timer reached the final 5 seconds, indicating a transition from “shopping” to “survival-based” decision-making.
